Besigye’s Legal Showdown: State Unveils Fresh Evidence in High-Stakes Case
Kampala – The legal drama surrounding opposition stalwart Dr. Kizza Besigye took a new turn this week as state prosecutors presented what they termed “substantive evidence” linking him and his colleagues to charges of incitement and unlawful assembly.
The charges stem from a series of protests organized in early 2024 under the banner of civil disobedience. The state alleges that the protests disrupted public order and threatened national stability. Alongside Besigye are co-accused Hajj Obeid Lutale and Capt. Denis Oola, both of whom deny any wrongdoing.
The prosecution presented footage, witness statements, and communication records said to detail coordination of demonstrations. Besigye’s legal team has called the case politically motivated, citing lack of credible evidence and the continued targeting of opposition voices.
“This is not just a trial of individuals — it’s a test of Uganda’s commitment to civil liberties,” said one of Besigye’s lawyers outside court.
Public interest in the case remains high, with civil society organizations urging the judiciary to act independently and uphold justice.
