After years of tension and armed conflict in eastern Congo, there is finally hope. The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda have agreed — under U.S. mediation — to draft a peace agreement by May 2, 2025.
Key points of the preliminary talks include:
- Ceasing support for armed rebel groups like M23 and FDLR
- Reopening cross-border trade routes
- Deploying a neutral international monitoring force
Regional leaders, including from Kenya and Uganda, are expected to play important roles in maintaining the momentum. However, experts warn that real peace will depend on long-term trust-building and resource-sharing agreements.
