Today, tens of thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square to honor the life of Pope Francis, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 88. His funeral Mass was presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re under a grey but respectful Vatican sky.
Leaders from over 130 countries, along with representatives from major religious organizations, attended the ceremony. Pope Francis, known for his focus on humility, interfaith dialogue, and care for the marginalized, left a deeply human legacy.
The Vatican confirmed the cause of death as stroke and heart failure. He was interred in the grottoes beneath St. Peter’s Basilica, near his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI. A period of mourning will continue for nine days.
